Life Outside Cities

Life Outside Cities

Life in a big sparkling city…

Or how about a quiet country farm?

Which kind of lifestyle is more… exciting… more rewarding, more meaningful?

I for one, feel disenchanted with life in big cities… and I’ve visited or lived in plenty of them. From my hometown of London, to Budapest Hungary, Bangkok Thailand, Atlanta Georgia, Frankfurt Germany, Toronto Canada, Bogota Colombia, Lima Peru, and many more.

And I strongly relate to the sentiment expressed by Thomas Moore when he said:

“There is no way to re-enchant our lives in a disenchanted culture
except by becoming renegades from that culture
and planting the seeds for a new one.”

So for 2015 I’ve set myself the challenge of moving away from big city life to explore alternatives in continental Europe… visiting self-sufficient eco villages, seminar centres and intentional communities who are using permaculture, biomimicry, eco friendly housing, renewable energy, organic farming… and more.

My goal is to find a higher quality of life experience through simplicity, community, health and harmony with a more natural environment than is currently possible in today’s concrete jungles.

Isn’t it true that us ‘city folk’ tend to think of nature as somewhere to escape to when we need a break..?

But perhaps Gary Snyder is right where he says:

“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.”

And natural living to me, is not about ‘environmental protection’. You see, today’s problems of pollution and waste can quickly be solved by advances in resource management, nanotechnology, renewable energy, and 3d printing.

But more important is the waste of life, the disconnection of the human spirit trapped in the mechanical gyrations of a soulless metropolis.

Thich Nhat Hanh said

“We need to move beyond the idea of ‘environment’ and fall back in love with Mother Earth.”

And Duane Elgin said:

“Only after people express their anger and sadness over the broken dreams of material prosperity will they turn to the task of building a sustainable economy.”

For just as my man Henry David Thoreau said:

“What is the use of a house if you don’t have a decent planet to put it on?”

I’m hoping that through my new adventure, I find somewhere on our planet that I can happily call home.

Last year I was in Montreal Canada and came across a social media savvy homestead community called

The Valhalla Movement

Can you imagine living in a small community of friends, all driven by similar ideals, all contributing to each others betterment…?

…pooling time and resources, collaborating on outreach projects, and contributing to the needs of global change for sustainable living and individual empowerment…?

Well, I think I may have found a group doing ALL of it.

The Valhalla Movement near Montreal Canada.

Not only do they have all of the earthly-Earth-Shipping-home-steading-self-sufficiency-&-community-spirit stuff down…

…but they also have modern digital media, web development and social networking happening too.

The Valhalla Movement intro video begins by defining ‘Freedom Culture’ as:

a collective state of being that empowers and encourages all individuals to contribute their unique gifts to the world

With a focus of:

  • Ecologically sustainable lifestyles
  • Economic self reliance
  • Global collaborative action

A fantastic Canada-based project.
